Gateshead Mencap Society
An independant local registered charity run entirely by volunteers.
We are here to improve the lives and opportunities of children
and adults with a learning disability.
How you can support Gateshead Mencap Society

Together we can create a world in which people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included. Where people who have a learning disability can feel proud of who they are and accepted by society.

We want you, your friends and your family to join with us to campaign, raise money and volunteer alongside people with a learning disability - we can't think of a more rewarding way to spend your time...

Drive a Minibus

You know you always wanted to be a bus driver, well this is your golden opportunity! You could drive once a week, fortnightly or even once a month. For insurance purposes drivers must be aged 25 to 74

This minibus was presented to Gateshead Mencap by Wooden Spoon, the rugby charity.

Havn't got much time? Don't worry, it doesn't take much to make a difference!

Fundraising - Why we need funds.

Gateshead Mencap is a totally voluntary organization and relies on fundraising to survive. The minibus service we provide to collect our club members is a lifeline as the majority of them ar not able to use public transport unsupervised. Insurance for each bus is currently almost £2000. Tax, maintainence and fuel for the busses, in addition to the initial cost of the buses themsleves, take up a large proportion of our funds.

How you can help

  • Take part in or help with one of our fundraising events.
  • Make a donation.
  • Make a regular subscription.
  • Leave a gift in your will.
  • Organise an event such as a coffee morning.

Local campaigns

In recent times our supporters have fought against day centre closures. They also keep a watch over the soaring cost of day centre charges which vary depending where you live. Carers allowances are also the subject of many campaigns.
